El pasado 4 de junio se celebró la cuarta edición del Coors Light Indie Fest en la Base Ramey en Aguadilla. El propósito del evento es exponer el talento musical local (e internacional) en los géneros de rock y dance. Los actos se dividieron en dos tarimas: el Indie Rock stage y el Indie Dance Rock stage.
This past June 4 the 4th edition of the Coors Light Indie Fest was celebrated in Ramey Base, Aguadilla. The main purpose of this event is the exposure of local (and international) music acts of the rock and dance genres. The acts were divided in two stages: the Indie Rock Stage and the Indie Dance Rock stage.
Yo llegué a las 4:30 – 5:00 y no estaba tan lleno como en años anteriores (la lluvia tuvo un rol importante en esto). La primera banda que vi fue Psiconautas así que desde ahí comentaré acerca del evento. He aquí lo mejor y lo no tan bueno del Indie (de lo que logré ver).
I finally got there between 4:30 and 5:00. It wasn’t as crowded as other years (the rain played a key role in this). The first band I got to see was Psiconautas so I will be commenting from there on. So here’s the best and the not so good from the Indie (from what I got to see).
Mejores/Best (Random Order)
Psiconautas: Una agrupación subestimada por la multitud enfocada en lo “mainstream” pero con un sonido único y especial. Tocaron temprano pero fue un tremendo set. / A group underestimated by the mainstream following crowd, Psiconautas have a unique and special sound. They played early but had a great set.
Los Petardos: Una de las bandas favoritas en el área oeste por su energía y rock ‘n roll con gandules. A pesar de la lluvia me lo gocé to’ (bailando y brincando con sombrilla en mano). /One of the west coast’s favorite bands with their energy and rock ‘n roll with gandules. Despite the rain I enjoyed this set dancing and jumping with my umbrella.
La Mancha del Jardín: Cuando empezaron el set empezó el aguacero pero a nadie le importó. / When their set started it also started to rain a LOT but nobody gave a damn.
Foglia: Fue la primera vez que los vi y quedé muy impresionada con el sonido y la energía de esta agrupación. Espero volver a verlos pronto. / It was the first time I saw and heard them and was very impressed by their sound and energy. I hope to see them soon.
Cut Copy: La primera vez que los escuche fue gracias a un amigo mío que me habló súper bien de ellos. Su sonido me llamó mucho la atención porque son 80’s new wave inspired. El set estuvo BRUTAL a pesar de un pequeño problema con la guitarra. / The first time I heard Cut Copy, it was thanks to a friend of mine who spoke to me about them. Their sound tickled my fancy with their 80’s new wave inspired beat. The set was AMAZING even with a small inconvenience with the guitar.
Auto Body: Primera vez que los vi y también me gustaron mucho. Tienen un sonido mega intenso y fueron uno de los favoritos en la carpa Indie Dance Rock. / First time I saw and heard them and I liked them very much. They have a very intense and energetic sound and were one of the favorites at the dance rock tent.
Decepciones/Disappointments
PXNDX: ¿Por qué? Mucha espera para sonido pésimo. La tarima principal estaba adelantada por 30 minutos o más y PXNDX fue la UNICA banda que tocó a la hora asignada en el itinerario. Lo menos que se podía esperar era que se escuchara bien y no fue así. La única canción que he escuchado de la banda fue “Disfraz” y no me gusta mucho. No le encuentro mucho sentido al auge que tiene esta banda en Puerto Rico, pero para los gustos… / Why? Long wait for bad sound. The main stage was ahead of schedule by 30 minutes or more and PXNDX were the ONLY band that started at the assigned time on the itinerary. The least you would expect was a good sound and that wasn’t the case. The only song I’ve heard from them is “Disfraz” and I’m not fond of it. I don’t find much relevance in the “fan base” this band has in Puerto Rico. Advice to the young: Just because your cool and (slightly) young uncle or aunt like a band doesn’t mean they’re good.
The Disfunction: ¿Porqué? The Disfunction ha sido una banda que ha tratado de entrar a la cartelera del Indie desde 2009 y lamentablemente nunca se le dió. Este año, con la integración de la tarima Indie Dance Rock (el cual es el género de esta banda de Rincón) hubiera sido lo ideal que The Disfunction fueran parte del evento. Mi conclusión a la serie de eventos desafortunados que llevaron a esta banda talentosa a mudarse a NYC para crecer en la escena musical “gringa” es que al ser una banda cuyas canciones son en inglés, las disqueras locales simplemente no les dieron la cara./ Why? The Disfunction has been trying to get into the Indie Fest billing since 2009 and sadly this never happened. This year, with the integration of the Indie Dance Rock (the genre of this band from Rincon) stage it would have been ideal for The Disfunction to have been part of this event. My conclusion as to why this talented band left Puerto Rico to try and make it in the NYC indie scene is that because their songs were in English the local record labels and the mainstream drones simply ignored them.

El evento quedó muy bien a pesar del clima y estoy muy contenta de haber podido asistir al evento. Espero que el año que viene sea mejor aún. Aquí les dejo más pics del evento.
In general, the event was great, despite the rain and I’m very happy to have been a part of this. I hope that next year it will be even better. I leave you with more pics from the fest.

The disfunction no gano la compe, INDUSTRIA SATELITE (la mejor!!!) gano con casi 3,000 votos. La gente de Disfuncion saco como 200 votos. Q pela!!! Q viva la Industria!!!
Duh,dude! Todos sabemos que Industria Satélite ganó la votación ya que everyone, their mother and their dog votaron por I.S. Pero yo no hablo acerca de la competencia (la “compe” me importa un carajo),sino de que el público y las disqueras ignoran música buena y diferente porque no entienden el lenguaje y no ven $$ en eso.BTW Industria Satélite no estan nada mal,simplemente suenan como todas las bandas mainstreams que han pegado en P.R. desde Sol de Menta lo cual considero ordinario y un poco aburrido.El spot de I.S. en el Indie se creó ya que este año no se hizo proyecto indie y la votación fue lo más fácil. ¿Y para que ganaron? Para tocar en la carpa de Dance Rock (lo que no son) a las 2:45,cuando no había nadie en el fest(mas que los empleados y uno que otro chamaquito).Así que los felicito por la exposición y los acompaño en los sentimientos por el pequeño slap in the face de parte de los que organizaron los itinerarios.BTW la decepción no fue porque The Disfunction perdieron sino porque merecían un spot ya que habían bandas de música anglosajona (y Dance Rock) en la cartelera.
